Key words and phrases: boundary conditions of heat-mass transfer; tasks of heat conductivity and diffusivity; complex industrial processes; models and reality; accompanying phenomena; drying and heat processing; elementary phenomena; efficient coefficients of heat-mass transfer.
Abstract: Initial and accompanying phenomena of transfer and conversion in the process of drying and heat processing of materials as well as complex industrial drying process and others are considered. It is shown that the number of phenomena determining industrial process can reach tens and even hundreds. Types of models applied to phenomena and processes description and basic approaches to physical and mathematical modeling are discussed. Reasons for inadequacy of many existing models to real processes are analyzed. 11 examples of comparison “model – reality” for basic groups of chemical technology processes are given. Problems, which remain open in these examples, are pointed out. Kinetic classification of materials as objects of drying is developed; it contains a set of 6 basic types of temperature-moisture relationships. Unified kinetic approach, which contains methodology of experimental research and mathematical modeling of processes of drying of materials with significant temperature kinetics is described. The examples of analytical solutions and engineering calculating dependencies are given.

Key words and phrases: CFD; droplet size distribution; nozzle; spray drying.
Abstract: Conventional pressure atomization imparts a high initial velocity to the droplets and also produces a wide droplet size distribution. If the jet is broken up with the assistance of ultrasonic energy finer droplets with a much more uniform size distribution can be obtained. Using the correlation of Rajan and Pandit [2001] which accounts for the physical-chemical properties of the liquid as well as the ultrasonic properties of the atomizer (amplitude, frequency, area of vibrating surface), a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was carried out to predict the spray evaporation performance in a co-current cylinder-on-cone spray chamber. The results are compared with those for a conventional pressure atomizer. The model predictions were validated by favorable comparison with literature data on velocity and temperature fields in a cylinder-on-cone chamber geometry. Since the ultrasonic nozzle has a low initial droplet velocity and a uniform size distribution, different droplet velocities (0.014, 5.59 and 59.0 m/s) and mean droplet sizes (10.0, 30.0, 50.0, 70.0, 90.0 and 110.0 ) are used to simulate spray drying. The advantages and limitations of using ultrasonic atomizer rather than the conventional ones are discussed in the light of the simulation results.

Key words and phrases: H. Beissner, E. Tsotsas Thermal Process Engineering, Otto-von-Guericke-University, Magdeburg, Germany
Abstract: The kinetics of washing of porous bodies has been investigated experimentally and theoretically for the case of miscibility between washing and loading liquid. The washing experiments have been carried out with appropriate model substances (sintered bronze cylinders, isopropanol, water). To describe the process, models for density-driven convection (displacement) and intraparticle diffusion have been used. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that an additional gas-liquid interface can, in many cases accelerate considerably the kinetics of washing. This “tea-bag effect” is due to interface instabilities and has never before been described in literature. It has been analyzed systematically by measurements, but can not yet be predicted in a quantitative way.

Key words and phrases: Electropolymerization; Enzyme electrode; Horseradish peroxidase; Hydrogen peroxide; Poly (neutral red).
Abstract: A new hydrogen peroxide biosensor was constructed by immobilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in poly (neutral red) (PNR) film. The conditions for the electropolymerization of neutral red at glassy carbon electrode to form the PNR membrane have been carefully studied with orthogonal design. On this basis, HRP was added to the electrolyte, and with the electropolymerization of neutral red, HRP was immobilized in the PNR membrane to construct poly (neutral red) horseradish peroxidase enzyme electrode, which was designed as PNR/HRP. The bioelectrocatalytic reduction of H2O2 at the enzyme electrode was studied. The electrode exhibits an excellent activity to catalyze the reduction of H2O2 in the absence of any electron transfer mediator, and the response current is proportional to H2O2 concentration in the range of 5.0 ? 10-5 ~ 1.0 ? 10-3 mol/L-1, with the correlation coefficient r = 0.9995 (n = 6). Moreover, the PNR/HRP enzyme electrode can be easily fabricated, and its reproducibility and lifetime are perfect. So the sensor can be used for the conventional detection of H2O2.
